Old fuse box or a board that keeps tripping? Licensed switchboard upgrades for homes across Newcastle, Maitland, Singleton and the Hunter Valley, quoted up front.
Harris Electrical & Solar is a local team of licensed electricians with offices in Newcastle and Singleton. Plenty of Hunter homes are still running on ceramic fuses, or on boards that were never built for air conditioning, induction cooktops, EV chargers or solar.
We inspect your board, explain what it needs in plain English and give you a clear quote before any work starts. Because we are Level 2 accredited, any work on the service connection or metering is handled by the same team.
From a single safety switch to a full board replacement, here is what we get called out for most.
We replace old and overloaded switchboards with a modern board, circuit breakers and safety switches, so your home meets current standards and can handle the way you use power today.
01.
Still got ceramic or rewirable fuses? We swap the old fuse box for circuit breakers and safety switches that cut the power fast when something goes wrong.
02.
Adding air conditioning, an induction cooktop, a hot water system, an EV charger or solar? We upgrade your board so it has the space and capacity for the extra load.
03.
Renovating, extending or moving to three-phase power? We upgrade the board and, as a Level 2 accredited team, look after the supply and metering side as well.
04.
Safety switches help protect your family from electric shock. We fit them to boards that have none and add them to circuits that are not yet covered.
05.
Board keeps tripping, buzzing or running hot? We track down the cause, fix it safely and tell you honestly whether a repair or an upgrade is the better option.

Replace existing light with ceiling fans . Excellent job , the electricians were very friendly and respectful of my home and very tidy. I was very grateful and impressed that my job was brought forward by 3 days due to another job of theirs completing early. The entire experience from our initial phone enquiry to scheduling and final install was seamless. We will definitely recommend them to anyone needing work done. Thanks GuysPosted on Google![]()

Highly recommend Harris Electrical and Solar! They recently installed a Sigenergy solar system for us, and the entire experience was outstanding. The team was incredibly professional, friendly, and took the time to explain how everything works, including setting up the mySigen monitoring app. The installation itself is neat, tidy, and running perfectly. It is rare to find a team that combines top-tier technical expertise with such great customer service. Thank you for a fantastic job!Posted on Google![]()

Harris Electrical are amazing. Despite not installing our off-grid system. They were able to help us over the phone and then when it wasn't the system issue but something else they came out with a generator (in case) on a Sat evening to help restore power. Then they trained us on the system so we can be more self sufficient and followed through with check-ins over the coming days. I am highly impressed especially after the lack of service given to us by the original installer.Posted on Google![]()

2 years ago we had a 10kw solar system & 8 kw inverter installed at our house by Harris Electrical & Solar.Kyle did a great job of designing the Solar System to suit our house perfectly, and organising everything to get the job done including switchboard modifications and HWS timer.Kyle spent a lot of time explaining how the system works and what we needed for the best system for us.The installation team were very professional and did a great job, very neat. The system works perfectly & were very happy with it,so 2 years later in August 2026 we asked Kyle about adding a battery. He designed a great system that suits our house and existing solar system. Also with a gateway for black out protection. It is all running really well & our electricity bill is tracking very low which is what we wanted. We would like to thank Kyle and the Harris Electrical and Solar team for their great work and we would highly recommend Harris Electrical and Solar.Posted on Google![]()

I've held off writing this review because I know you only get to do ONE Google review per business, and for such a huge investment, I wanted to give everyone (both the business and the review readers) the benefit of a full, complete and time-tested review. Cooper and the team installed our ground-mounted, 21.6kW Solaredge solar system in April 2023. We were huge electricity users at that stage, with underfloor heating (our main heating source for Winter) being a big chunk of our annual 38MW usage. With the prices of electricity starting to increase hand over fist, we had to think of better solutions to our needs. The solar system definitely helped our situation and kept our electricity costs at bay, despite price increase after increase. But I'll admit it was when Cooper and the team installed our 48kW Sigenergy battery in August 2025 that really tipped things in our favour, together with our moving over to Amber Electricity as our electricity provider, and being willing to monitor and utilise the wholesale electricity market. We also added a fireplace in June 2025 to move away from relying on the underfloor heating, as firewood on our property is free. Before any of these changes, our average monthly electricity bills were $476 from April 2019 to April 2023 (no adjustment for increases on earlier bills or for inflation). Since August last year, with the battery installed and being with Amber, our TOTAL cost with Amber for the last year has been a credit of $21.72. No, I'm not kidding. And that's the total cost, including daily supply charges and Amber's subscription fees. So we paid NOTHING for electricity and being connected to the grid, over the last year. In terms of payback periods, our high-end system (including ground-mounted solar, battery, blackout backup, relays to control the underfloor heating, all meterbox work and the fireplace installed) was not cheap, however from where we were previously and at the electricity prices we were paying in August 2025, our payback period on the whole lot is LESS THAN 5 YEARS. And if we separate the fireplace out and reduce our annual usage to take that into account, our solar system + battery still comes in at around 8-9 years payback, which is still pretty good (considering the bells and whistles it has, the quality, and the ground-mounting adding about $25k alone to the total cost). With regards the workmanship and professionalism of Harris Electrical & Solar, and the quality of the products installed, definitely 5 star! Cooper is wonderfully friendly, insanely knowledgeable and happy to explain things to me in the minute detail that my brain needs. The crew are so friendly and skilled and an absolute pleasure to have working here. They do a stellar job and leave the site wonderfully clean. There were, as there often are, some teething issues, but the guys came back whenever required and worked them out to get everything functioning properly. The concrete baseboard under the battery cracked when the battery was first installed, which was cosmetic only, but they focussed on getting the system up and running, and then return at a later date to take it apart, replace the baseboard and have it all working again by that same afternoon. We even had a power blackout the very first night that the battery was installed but were blissfully unaware, as the blackout backup on the battery kicked in without even a flicker - we were only alerted to the blackout when our neighbours saw our lights on and sent us a text! So yes, I VERY highly recommend Cooper and the team at Harris Electrical & Solar. We have been and will continue to be returning customers. And I love that they're local and focused on ongoing relationships with their clients, not just to get your money for an install and then forget you. Bravo, guys .. you've been instrumental in helping us massively reduce our electricity costs, immediately and well into the future.
You want an electrician who turns up, does the job right and charges what they said they would. That is how we have built our name around Newcastle, Singleton and the Hunter.
Every job is completed by qualified, licensed electricians and finished to current Australian standards.
We look at the job, explain your options and give you a clear quote before any work starts.
With offices in Newcastle and Singleton, we work across the Hunter every day, so you are dealing with locals who know the area.
We show up when we say we will, keep you in the loop and leave your home clean when the job is done.
Electrical, Level 2 work, solar, batteries, EV chargers and air conditioning all under one roof, so you only need one phone number.
It depends on the size of the board, the number of circuits, the condition of your existing wiring and whether the supply or metering needs work as well. We inspect the board and give you a free quote up front, so you know the cost before we start.
Common signs are ceramic fuses, no safety switches, frequent tripping, flickering lights or adding big loads like air conditioning, an EV charger or solar. We can inspect your board and tell you honestly whether it needs upgrading.
Most home switchboard upgrades are finished within a day. Your power will be off while we work, and we will let you know what to expect before we start.
A circuit breaker protects the wiring by cutting power when a circuit is overloaded. A safety switch protects people by cutting power when it detects electricity leaking to earth, like when someone gets a shock. A modern switchboard has both.
Often, yes. Older boards may not have the space, capacity or safety switches needed for big new loads. We check your board as part of the quote and only recommend an upgrade if you need one.
Yes. All work is carried out by licensed electricians and we are fully insured. We also hold Level 2 accreditation for work on the service connection and metering.
